Zerkegem is a charming rural village in the municipality of Jabbeke, in the province of West Flanders, Belgium. History
Zerkegem is considered the oldest sub-municipality of Jabbeke, with its first known mention dating back to 765 under the name “Sirigoheim.” The suffix “-gem” (or “-hem”) means “settlement,” while the origin of the first part of the name remains uncertain. Historians have linked it to Celtic, Frankish, or early Germanic roots.
Archaeological excavations have uncovered a Celtic burial ground, proving that the area was inhabited long before the Middle Ages. By the 9th century, the village belonged to the Abbey of Saint-Vaast (Sint-Vedastus) in Arras, which played an important role in the establishment of the local parish and influenced village life for centuries.
