In a remarkable milestone for commercial aviation, Airbus has successfully completed one of the longest nonstop flights ever performed by a passenger aircraft. The Airbus A350-1000ULR test aircraft, registered F-WULR, remained airborne for 24 hours and 23 minutes on a nonstop journey from Melbourne (MEL) to Toulouse (TLS), demonstrating the extraordinary capabilities of the aircraft being developed for Qantas’ Project Sunrise.
The marathon flight was not about carrying passengers—it was a comprehensive certification and endurance test. Airbus engineers and flight test crews collected vast amounts of performance data while evaluating the aircraft’s systems under extreme operating conditions. The aircraft followed an easterly route across the Pacific Ocean, North America, Greenland, the Atlantic Ocean, and Europe before returning to Airbus’ headquarters in Toulouse.
Designed for the World’s Longest Routes
The A350-1000ULR (Ultra Long Range) has been specially developed for Qantas to make nonstop flights between Sydney and London and Sydney and New York a reality. Compared with the standard A350-1000, the ULR version features an additional rear centre fuel tank that increases its range by approximately 1,000 nautical miles (1,850 km), allowing flights of up to 22 hours in commercial service.
Although scheduled passenger flights will be shorter than this 24-hour test, Airbus intentionally pushed the aircraft beyond normal operational limits to verify fuel systems, aircraft performance, and overall reliability.
More Than Just a Record
Only a few days before the return flight, the same aircraft completed its first nonstop journey from Toulouse to Melbourne, flying for just over 19 hours. Together, the two flights represent one of the most demanding flight-test campaigns ever conducted on a commercial airliner.
Thousands of aviation enthusiasts tracked the aircraft live online. More than 120,000 people followed the final approach into Toulouse, where the aircraft even performed a brief go-around before touching down, adding a dramatic finale to an already historic mission.
What This Means for Air Travel
Once certified, the A350-1000ULR will allow Qantas to launch Project Sunrise, connecting Australia directly with Europe and North America without intermediate stops. These routes will eliminate lengthy layovers and redefine long-haul travel, while the aircraft’s cabin has been specifically designed to improve passenger comfort during flights exceeding 20 hours.
With a spacious 238-seat configuration, lower cabin altitude, advanced lighting systems, dedicated wellness areas, and improved air quality, the aircraft aims to make ultra-long-haul travel more comfortable than ever before.
The successful 24-hour, 23-minute Melbourne–Toulouse flight marks another major step toward the future of nonstop global aviation, showcasing not only the impressive efficiency of the Airbus A350-1000ULR but also how close the industry is to making the world’s longest commercial flights a routine reality.
