The Boeing 777-200LR (ICAO: B77L) is the ultra-long-range version of the Boeing 777 family. Designed to connect virtually any two cities in the world non-stop, it was the longest-range commercial airliner when it entered service in 2006. Combining exceptional range with the proven reliability of the 777 platform, the aircraft enabled airlines to open new ultra-long-haul routes that had previously been impossible or uneconomical.
History
The Boeing 777-200LR was developed as part of the 777 Worldliner programme alongside the Boeing 777-300ER. Featuring increased fuel capacity, a strengthened structure, and more powerful engines, it was specifically designed for ultra-long-haul operations.
The aircraft made its first flight on 8 March 2005 and entered commercial service with Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) in 2006. During its certification programme, the 777-200LR set a world record by flying non-stop from Hong Kong to London via the Pacific Ocean, covering more than 21,600 kilometres (11,664 nautical miles) in just under 23 hours.
Design
The Boeing 777-200LR shares the same fuselage as the 777-200ER but incorporates significant improvements for long-range performance. It features reinforced landing gear, increased maximum take-off weight, additional fuel capacity, and raked wingtips that improve aerodynamic efficiency.
The aircraft is powered exclusively by the General Electric GE90-110B1L or GE90-115B, among the most powerful jet engines ever built. Inside, airlines typically configure the aircraft with premium-heavy layouts for long-haul comfort, although seating arrangements vary by operator.

With its combination of reliability, efficiency, and exceptional endurance, the 777-200LR continues to serve airlines on demanding ultra-long-haul routes and stands as one of the most impressive members of the Boeing 777 family.
My Experience
I flew on the Boeing 777-200LR with Emirates on 27 September 2014, travelling from Brussels (BRU) to Dubai (DXB). The flight was operated by A6-EWE, one of Emirates’ Boeing 777-200LR aircraft.
This was my first experience aboard the ultra-long-range variant of the Boeing 777. The aircraft offered a comfortable cabin, a quiet ride, and excellent long-haul performance, making the journey from Belgium to the Middle East an enjoyable introduction to one of Boeing’s most capable wide-body airliners.
