Snellegem is a peaceful village in the municipality of Jabbeke, in the province of West Flanders, Belgium. Located just 8 km west of Bruges, it combines a rich medieval history with a quiet rural atmosphere, making it one of the region’s most historically significant villages.
History
Snellegem is widely regarded as the oldest settlement on the Bruges plain. During the Merovingian period (6th–7th centuries), it was an important royal estate centred around ‘t Oosthof, where representatives of the Merovingian kings administered the surrounding territory. The village played a key role in the early Christianisation of Flanders, with one of the region’s earliest churches established here in the 7th century.
The name of the village has evolved over the centuries, appearing as Snethlingehem in 941 before gradually becoming the modern “Snellegem.”
Things to See
‘t Oosthof
The historic ‘t Oosthof is the oldest known farm estate in West Flanders. Originally the centre of a Merovingian royal domain, it later became a fortified manor and retains impressive 15th- and 16th-century architectural elements. It is also associated with the medieval writer Jacob van Maerlant, who once worked there.
Sint-Elooi Church
The village church has ancient origins dating back to the early Middle Ages. Dedicated to Saint Eligius (Sint-Elooi), it stands on the site of one of the earliest parish churches in coastal Flanders.
Vloethemveld
On the southern edge of Snellegem lies Vloethemveld, a protected nature reserve featuring forests, heathland, ponds and walking trails. It is an important area for biodiversity and offers excellent opportunities for hiking and birdwatching.
Village Character
Snellegem remains a small rural community surrounded by farmland and woodland. Although it became part of the municipality of Jabbeke in 1977, it has retained its distinct identity and traditional village centre. The recently redesigned village square highlights the area’s historic character while providing a welcoming gathering place for residents and visitors.
