Dosso

Located in southwestern Niger, Dosso is one of the country’s most fertile and agriculturally important regions. Bordering both Benin and Nigeria, it serves as a gateway between the Sahel and the more humid landscapes of West Africa. With its rolling savannahs, the mighty Niger River, and rich cultural heritage, Dosso offers a very different side of Niger from the vast deserts found further north.

The regional capital, Dosso, is known for its royal history and remains the traditional seat of the Dosso Kingdom, one of the oldest traditional kingdoms in Niger. The city is home to the Sultan of Dosso, whose cultural influence continues to play an important role in local traditions and ceremonies.

Agriculture forms the backbone of the regional economy. Farmers cultivate millet, sorghum, rice, maize, and groundnuts, while livestock farming also contributes significantly to local livelihoods. Thanks to its relatively favorable climate and access to the Niger River, Dosso is one of the country’s most productive agricultural regions.

One of Dosso’s greatest natural attractions is W National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared with Benin and Burkina Faso. Named after the distinctive bends of the Niger River that resemble the letter “W,” the park protects one of West Africa’s most important ecosystems. Visitors can find elephants, buffalo, antelopes, baboons, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hundreds of bird species, making it one of the best wildlife destinations in the region.

The population is diverse, with the Zarma (Djerma) people forming the largest ethnic group, alongside Fulani, Hausa, and several smaller communities. Traditional festivals, music, and colorful markets reflect the rich cultural diversity of the region.

Because of its strategic location along major trade routes connecting Niger with Benin and Nigeria, Dosso has long served as an important commercial hub, facilitating the movement of goods across West Africa.
