The Places Starlink Still Can’t Reach — And Why

Starlink has changed the meaning of being offline.

A traveller can now sit in the middle of a desert, camp far from the nearest town, cross an ocean or stay somewhere deep in the mountains and still potentially connect to high-speed internet.

But there is an interesting contradiction.

Thousands of Starlink satellites orbit almost the entire planet, yet there are still countries where you cannot officially use Starlink at all.

The reason is rarely technological.

It is usually political.

Satellites Don’t Stop at Borders

Traditional internet infrastructure follows geography.

Mobile networks need towers. Fibre requires cables. Remote islands, mountains and deserts are therefore expensive places to connect.

Starlink works differently.

Its satellites orbit hundreds of kilometres above Earth, passing over dozens of countries every day. Technically, a satellite flying above France can later pass over Russia, Iran or China.

But internet access is still governed by countries below.

That means a Starlink satellite may be directly above you while the service remains unavailable.

China

China is one of the biggest blank spaces on the Starlink map.

The country maintains strict control over telecommunications infrastructure and internet access, while foreign satellite communication systems face significant restrictions.

China is also developing its own satellite internet constellations.

From a technical perspective, providing Starlink coverage over China would not be particularly unusual.

Politically, however, allowing an independent foreign satellite internet system is another matter entirely.

North Korea

North Korea is perhaps the least surprising country without Starlink.

Most citizens cannot freely access the global internet in the first place. Instead, the country operates a highly restricted domestic network.

A satellite terminal capable of connecting directly to an international network would bypass much of the country’s existing telecommunications control.

The satellites may pass overhead, but officially connecting to them is a completely different story.

Russia

Russia is another huge gap.

Geographically, Russia would actually be one of the countries that could benefit most from satellite internet.

It is enormous.

Thousands of settlements are separated by forests, tundra and vast distances where building conventional broadband infrastructure is difficult and expensive.

But Starlink has not been authorised as a normal consumer service in Russia.

The technology has also become politically sensitive because of Starlink’s role in Ukraine.

Russia is instead working on its own satellite internet systems.

Iran

Iran is one of the most fascinating cases.

The Iranian government has not authorised Starlink as a conventional internet provider, yet Starlink terminals have reportedly appeared inside the country.

This illustrates one of the fundamental challenges governments face with satellite internet.

You can block a website.

You can order an internet provider to shut down.

You can control mobile towers.

But controlling thousands of satellites moving across the sky is considerably more complicated.

That does not mean using Starlink illegally is safe. Authorities can restrict the importation of terminals, confiscate equipment or punish unauthorised satellite communications.

For travellers, this distinction is extremely important.

Technically possible does not mean legally permitted.

Syria

Syria has also remained outside Starlink’s normal consumer network.

Satellite internet could theoretically be extremely useful in a country where infrastructure has been damaged by years of conflict.

But telecommunications licensing, sanctions, politics and security concerns make deployment complicated.

Again, seeing satellite coverage overhead does not mean travellers can simply carry a Starlink terminal across the border.

Afghanistan

Afghanistan is another place where satellite internet seems almost perfectly suited to the geography.

Large parts of the country are mountainous and remote. Many communities are difficult to reach with fibre or traditional broadband infrastructure.

A small satellite dish could theoretically connect isolated villages without requiring thousands of kilometres of cables.

But regulation and political circumstances have slowed the introduction of services such as Starlink.

Ironically, some of the places that could benefit most from satellite internet are also among the hardest places to introduce it.

India

India represents a somewhat different situation.

Unlike countries that are fundamentally opposed to Starlink, India has been involved in a long regulatory process surrounding satellite communications.

The potential market is enormous.

India contains Himalayan villages, desert settlements, islands and huge rural areas where satellite internet could complement existing mobile and fibre networks.

If Starlink becomes widely available throughout India, one of the largest remaining gaps on its global map would disappear.

Parts of Africa

Africa presents another fascinating Starlink map.

Many countries already have Starlink, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, where satellite internet can provide an alternative to expensive or unreliable terrestrial broadband.

But availability remains uneven.

Licensing requirements, spectrum regulation, taxation and telecommunications policy differ dramatically between countries.

Crossing a border in Africa can therefore mean going from a country where Starlink works normally to one where the same equipment is not officially authorised.

For overland travellers, that creates an entirely new type of connectivity problem.

North Africa

North Africa has historically been one of Starlink’s more complicated regions.

Countries such as Algeria, Egypt and Morocco have faced delays or regulatory uncertainty surrounding Starlink availability.

The geography would make satellite internet extremely attractive.

The Sahara alone contains enormous areas where traditional telecommunications infrastructure is extremely limited.

Yet deserts are easier for satellites to overcome than bureaucracy.

What About the Middle of the Ocean?

Interestingly, some of the most isolated places on Earth may actually be easier to connect than certain countries.

Starlink Maritime allows vessels to connect far from land.

That means you can potentially have broadband hundreds of kilometres from the nearest coastline while being unable to legally use the same technology after arriving in a particular country.

It creates a strange modern reality:

You can have internet in the middle of an ocean but lose it when you cross a political border.

Can Travellers Carry a Starlink Mini Everywhere?

The increasingly portable Starlink Mini makes this question particularly relevant for travellers.

The idea is tempting.

Put the terminal in your backpack, travel somewhere remote and create your own internet connection.

But it isn’t quite that simple.

Starlink roaming plans have geographical restrictions, and individual countries have their own laws concerning satellite communication equipment.

Some countries may require licences.

Others may restrict satellite terminals completely.

Customs officials could also confiscate unauthorised equipment.

So before carrying Starlink into a country where the service is not officially available, check both Starlink’s current coverage information and local telecommunications regulations.

A functioning satellite connection does not automatically make that connection legal.

The Last Internet Borders

The fascinating thing about Starlink is that it is slowly removing one of the oldest limitations of communications: distance.

Mountains matter less.

Deserts matter less.

Oceans matter less.

Remote islands matter less.

But borders still matter.

The remaining Starlink dead zones reveal something interesting about the modern internet.

We often imagine internet access as a technological problem.

Increasingly, it isn’t.

The satellites already exist.

The signal may already be above us.

What determines whether we can connect is often permission from the government below.

And so the world’s final internet frontiers may not be the most remote places on Earth.

They may simply be the places where politics prevents the signal from coming down.
