Zinder

Located in southeastern Niger along the border with Nigeria, Zinder is one of the country’s oldest, largest, and most historically significant regions. Before Niamey became the capital in 1926, the city of Zinder served as the capital of the French colony of Niger. Today, the region remains an important cultural, economic, and commercial centre, renowned for its rich Hausa heritage, historic architecture, and vibrant markets.

The regional capital, Zinder, is Niger’s second-largest city and one of the country’s most fascinating urban destinations. At its heart lies the Sultan’s Palace, residence of the Sultan of Damagaram, whose traditional authority continues to hold cultural significance. Nearby, the historic Birni (old town) and the colorful Zengo quarter feature narrow streets, mud-brick houses, and bustling markets that reflect centuries of history.

Founded in the eighteenth century, the Sultanate of Damagaram grew into one of the most influential kingdoms in the central Sahel. Thanks to its strategic location on trans-Saharan trade routes, Zinder became a thriving centre for commerce, Islamic learning, and craftsmanship, connecting North Africa with the kingdoms of West Africa.

The region’s economy is driven by agriculture, livestock, and trade. Farmers cultivate millet, sorghum, cowpeas, and groundnuts, while cattle, goats, sheep, and camels are traded throughout the region. Its proximity to Nigeria also makes Zinder one of Niger’s busiest cross-border trading hubs.

The population is predominantly Hausa, with important Kanuri, Fulani (Peul), and Tuareg communities adding to the region’s cultural diversity. Traditional festivals, music, crafts, and cuisine remain central to everyday life, offering visitors an authentic introduction to the cultures of the Sahel.

Beyond the city, the region is characterized by open savannah, rocky outcrops, seasonal riverbeds, and traditional villages. These landscapes have supported both farming and pastoralism for centuries, shaping the lifestyles of the people who call Zinder home.
