The Zagros Mountains of Iraq

Stretching across the eastern part of Iraq, the Zagros Mountains form one of the country’s most spectacular natural landscapes. Rising from broad valleys into rugged limestone peaks, the range creates a dramatic contrast with the plains and cities of Mesopotamia.

The Iraqi Zagros are particularly prominent in the Kurdistan Region, where mountains, valleys, rivers and high plateaus shape both the landscape and everyday life.

A landscape of mountains and valleys

The Zagros are not a single line of peaks but a vast and complex mountain system. In Iraq, the range extends along much of the country’s eastern and northeastern border with Iran.

Steep ridges are separated by valleys and high plateaus, while seasonal streams and rivers cut through the mountains. In spring, parts of the landscape can become surprisingly green, with wildflowers covering the mountain slopes.

As elevation increases, the scenery changes. Lower valleys are often warmer and more densely settled, while higher areas can experience snow and freezing temperatures during winter.

Some of Iraq’s highest mountains

The Iraqi Zagros contain many of the country’s highest peaks. Among them is Cheekha Dar, which rises to approximately 3,611 metres near the Iraq–Iran border.

Other notable mountain areas include the peaks around RawanduzHalgurd and Barzan. These mountains attract hikers, climbers, photographers and travellers interested in landscapes away from the major tourist routes.

The combination of steep cliffs, open mountain slopes and deep valleys gives the Iraqi Zagros a distinctive appearance.

The Zagros and Kurdish culture

The mountains are deeply connected with the history and culture of the Kurdish people. For centuries, the valleys and highlands of the Zagros have provided places for communities to settle, farm and move between regions.

Mountain villages are often surrounded by orchards, agricultural land and grazing areas. Traditional ways of life remain visible in many parts of the region, alongside rapidly developing towns and modern infrastructure.

The landscape has also played an important role in the history and politics of the region, making the Zagros more than simply a geographical feature.

Wildlife and nature

The varied elevations and habitats of the Iraqi Zagros support a range of wildlife. Mountain environments provide habitat for species adapted to rocky slopes, forests, grasslands and high-altitude terrain.

The region is also important for plant life. Spring can transform the mountain valleys with green vegetation and colourful wildflowers, while the higher slopes retain a much harsher character.

A spectacular destination for exploration

For visitors, the Iraqi Zagros offer a very different mountain experience from the Alps or other heavily developed ranges. Roads wind through dramatic valleys, villages appear between the mountains, and large sections of the landscape remain relatively undeveloped.

Places around Rawanduz CanyonShaqlawa and the high mountains near the Iran–Iraq border provide opportunities for hiking, photography and exploring the region’s natural scenery.

Travel conditions can vary considerably, and anyone planning to visit remote mountain areas should check current local conditions, access restrictions and travel advice before setting out.

The mountains of eastern Iraq

The Zagros are one of the defining geographical features of Iraq. They influence the country’s climate, rivers, agriculture and settlement patterns while providing some of its most dramatic scenery.

From green valleys in spring to snow-covered peaks in winter, the Iraqi Zagros change dramatically throughout the year.

The Zagros Mountains are where Iraq rises into a world of high peaks, deep valleys and extraordinary landscapes.
